Concept Art
One of the tools filmmakers use to help visualize characters, settings, or scenes is concept art. A concept artist will work with the director to create artwork that can help establish the visual style of the film and communicate what things should look like to other team members. Concept art is used extensively in animation, gaming, and period and sci-fi/fantasy films, and is only a step in the process of designing the look of a film. More and more, films use finalized concept art as promotional materials to generate buzz for the film (as in the case of the Tomorrowland art below).
